Submissions may be sent directly to thehorizontaljournal@gmail.com or can be written in the form below.
Submissions are related to the broad theme of the casual and informal ways in which we have come to learn and unlearn things about ourselves. This can be:
the small things that have made an impression on us
our own ways and processes of gaining a skill
the everyday things that we’ve used to improve and challenge ourselves
little realizations about ourselves that we’ve made in passing
The focus of the stories is on the twenties and thirties of our lives because it is the time when we have the most proximate and intense encounters with ideas and expectations, and so we tend to do a lot of reflective work during this time period. It’s perhaps the time when we’re more able to, and better positioned, to articulate the experiences that we have. This does not mean, however, that there is an age restriction on the people submitting their writing.
Examples:
The way my friend uses YouTube to learn yoga, instead of signing up for classes
The process that my sister is using to learn to do the splits
How listening to a podcast made me realize that writing as a hobby was more accessible
That watching Hamilton made me realize that originality isn’t necessarily something entirely new, but just how things are arranged
LENGTH:
Pieces are relatively short: 200 - 800 words but they can be slightly longer, depending on content.
